Nearly two-thirds of Americans are planning to give gift cards this holiday season, but a new survey found that 27 percent of last year's gift cards went unused, meaning retailers are raking in the dough, while consumers lose out.
Buying them is easy: there are racks in drug stores and supermarkets offering the cards for everything from retailers to restaurants. Banks offer cards and individual retailers and shopping malls offer them, and if you can't get to a brick-and-mortar store, they've available for purchase online.
Not everyone thinks gift cards are a great gift. Consumer Reports money advisor Amanda Walker said that all too often, gift cards given to family and friends end up being worthless.
