Call it the perfect gift or call it impersonal, but millions of people will buy gift cards for their loved ones this Christmas season.
But what you may not know can cause you frustration. For example, every retailer has its own policy for gift cards.Some charge monthly fees, like J. Crew and Bank of America Visa. Some do not, like JCPenney, Macy's, and PacSun.
Consumer Reports magazine unveils some unknown truths about gift cards and what you need to know to protect yourself.
Retailers tell ABC15 that store clerks don't push the use of gift cards because the mere purchase of a card is already money in the bank. Basically, since the gift card has already been paid for, the stores aren't as eager to make a sale using that card.
Also, clerks are told the average gift card user spends 20 percent more than the cost of the gift card.
"I hate expiration dates," said Holiday Shopper Carol Gammon. "I read the fine print and I ask in the store before I buy."
